Trailblazers split doubleheader with Bishop Luers Knights

The University baseball team split a doubleheader with Bishop Luers last Saturday at RoundTripper Academy.

The Knights beat the Trailblazers 16-12 in the first game. Bishop Luers scored six runs in the top of the first inning. University got two runs in the bottom of the first: Jasper Owners scored on Ryan Castetter’s RBI groundout, then Owen Schellhase singled Beckett Suh home.

The Knights added one second inning run, but the Blazers came back to score six in the bottom of the second for an 8-7 lead. Suh’s right field hit brought Owens and Castetter home, then Mark Hamby tripled in Suh. Oliver Kingery scored on a wild pitch, then Cooper Cammack’s left field hit scored Schellhase and Jimmy Caldwell, giving University an 8-7 lead.

Luers scored twice in the top of the third to go up 9-8, but University tied the game in the bottom of the third when Cooper Burnett scored on an error. Charlie Ranek hit a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to bring in Caldwell, giving the Trailblazers a 10-9 lead.

The Knights scored three runs in the top of the fifth. University came back again with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, tying the score at 12-12. Hamby’s right field hit brought Burnett home, then Suh scored on Schellhase’s sacrifice fly. But Luers scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to get the win.

Hamby and Suh both had three hits. Owens also hit a triple, with Burnett and Cammack both getting a double.

University turned the tables on Bishop Luers in the second game, winning 8-7 on a walk-off walk.

Schellhase reached on error to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, then Suh drew a walk. Burnett laid down a bunt to get on base, moving Schellhase to third base and Suh to second base.

Schellhase tied the game after scoring on a wild pitch, which advanced Suh to third base and Burnett to second base. Hamby was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Caldwell drew a walk to bring in Suh for the winning run.

The Knights scored twice in the top of the first inning. University got a run back in the bottom of the first when Burnett singled in Castetter. Owens brought Ethan Cutsinger home with a single to tie the game in the second inning.

Suh blasted a two-run home run in the third inning, also scoring Castetter. Jimmy Caldwell followed that with a two-out homer, also bringing in Kingery. Luers scored two runs in the fourth inning and three in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6.

Burnett was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Castetter hit a double. Zane Kampmeier got the pitching win.

University is 9-6-1 for the season. The Blazers host Hamilton Heights on Tuesday, travel to Lawrence North on Wednesday and host Cathedral on Thursday.
