Submitted by Sue Finkam for Mayor
Carmel Republican mayoral candidate Sue Finkam announced last Friday her intent to form the Carmel Housing Coalition to address community concerns regarding the continued development of apartments, traffic congestion and available housing options within the city.
The coalition will allow residents to have a voice alongside elected officials, trade organizations, developers, builders, and businesses to use data to shape housing policy and create housing opportunities that meet the community’s needs.
“As Mayor Brainard transitions out of office, it is imperative that we create a framework for development that will guide future decision-making as to the type of product we focus on, where development occurs and how we invest in existing neighborhoods to improve quality of life for all residents,” Finkam said. “Goal One will be to provide certainty for the public and our development partners.”
Additional objectives of the Carmel Housing Coalition are to:
- Complete a housing study to identify available housing by type, understand housing demand, stratify housing pricing and measure how Carmel compares to its local and regional peers.
- Use results from the housing study and other available data to create a data-driven plan to meet Carmel’s housing needs.
- Determine how to provide for-sale product to meet community demand.
- Support well-designed, appropriately located residential projects based on community needs.
- Maintain competitiveness, preserve natural assets, protect home values and invest in green space.
- Improve public outreach by providing relevant information on housing issues that affect our residents and businesses.
“It’s clear that development is a primary concern of residents during this election,” Finkam. “Soon after taking office as your next mayor, we will address it in a collaborative, transparent manner, to provide peace-of-mind to all stakeholders.”
