Helen Neuhaus

February 15, 1936 – July 13, 2023

Helen Neuhaus, 87, Noblesville, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023, in the excellent care of Hamilton Trace Senior Living Center in Fishers. Helen was the wife of Harold D. Neuhaus, who preceded her in death on May 20, 1997.

Helen was the daughter of Cecil Cray and Imogine (Collier) Parsons and was born on February 15, 1936, in Lee County, Va. The family moved to Noblesville right after Helen graduated from Pennington Gap High School in 1953. Helen is survived by her younger brother Neal K. (Hilda) Parsons of Noblesville.

Helen met Harold after a short period of living in Noblesville, and she and Harold were married on August 7, 1955. She was the mother of five children, Steven Wayne Neuhaus, who preceded Helen in death shortly after birth, Connie Lou (Kent) Spurling of Noblesville, Rhonda Kay (Mark) McCammick of Carmel, Chris Alan (Stacie) Neuhaus of Greenfield, Ind., and she was preceded in death by her youngest, Larry Wayne (Linda) Neuhaus of Noblesville on April 17, 2023.

Together Helen and Harold were the grandparents of 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and she is survived as well by multiple nieces and nephews.

Helen worked her entire career in Noblesville as a cashier for the A&P Grocery Company, ending with a short stint with Kenley’s Supermarket before retiring in 1986. Helen was in her element working where she interacted with the public and often spoke fondly of the many lifelong friendships she developed working in the grocery. Helen was an avid homemaker and spent a great deal of her time making life at the family home a welcome place for family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed gardening and especially processing and preserving all the items that the garden provided. She loved learning as well and spent much of her time in the later years taking advantage of the knowledge base the internet provided. She enjoyed watching and following several homesteading channels for gardening ideas and techniques and also food preserving methods. She also loved the memories generated by listening to music from her younger years, and enjoyed the ability to stream music and listen in her quiet times to songs and music she enjoyed when she and Harold were living their lives together and also from her time as a young girl.

Unbeknown to many, Helen was a caregiver to numerous elder family members in her own home as those loved ones counted down their final days and needed the help to transition from this life. Helen was a very selfless person in many ways, giving of her time and her financial means to provide for others throughout her life to the end. We are all grateful for her generosity and fine example she provided.

Helen loved long conversations, whether in person or on the phone, and in her years after the passing of Harold, she made it a point to regularly stay in contact with as many of her extended family members and friends of old as possible. Even in her final days she did her best to call those she could to share her love and extend heartfelt gratitude for the years of friendship and good relations and memories.

Graveside rites will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens near Fishers, where she will be interred beside her beloved husband. Arrangements are entrusted to Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel, where you may send condolences at hartleyfuneralhomes.com.
