Rocks fall at first, but bounce back to win games 2 & 3 at Kokomo Tourney

The REPORTER

The Westfield softball team went 2-1 at the Kokomo Tournament this past weekend.

The Shamrocks played their first game last Friday against Caston, falling 9-7. The Comets led 8-0 after three innings. Westfield scored two runs in the top of the fourth, as Grace Fanelli’s center field hit brought in Makayla Watson, then Fanelli got home on Cara Snedeker’s center field hit.

Caston scored another run in the bottom of the fourth, with the Shamrocks getting the run back in the top of the fifth. Watson went home after Fanelli drew a bases-loaded walk.

Westfield continued to rally, with Snedeker scoring a sixth-inning run on a wild pitch. In the seventh inning, Lilly Amburgey scored on a wild pitch, then Sydney Jordan smacked a center field hit to bring Fanelli and Snedeker home before the Comets got the third out to end the game.

Watson finished the contest with two hits.

The Rocks bounced back to defeat Huntington North 5-4 in their first of two games last Saturday. Westfield scored two runs in the first inning: Watson led off with a double and Ava Kainrath blasted a home run to get the Shamrocks up 2-0.

Snedeker scored in the third inning when Avery Banas hit an RBI groundout. The Vikings jumped ahead 4-3 after putting up four runs in the sixth inning, but Fanelli won the game with a walkoff two-RBI single, scoring Watson and Sofia Easterhaus.

Jordan counted a double among her two hits, with Watson and Snedeker also getting two hits. Shea Vohs got the pitching win, with six strikeouts over five and a third innings.

Westfield cruised through its second Saturday game, beating Franklin County 11-2.

Five different Shamrocks hit one triple: Easterhaus, Chloe Tanner, Watson, Fanelli and Jordan. Tanner, Banas and Kainrath all hit a double. Watson finished the game 3-for-4, with Easterhaus also getting two hits. Tanner pitched four innings, tossing seven strikeouts.

Westfield is 7-5 and plays at Noblesville Tuesday before hosting Yorktown Thursday and traveling to Tri-West on Friday.
