With an eye toward breaking the supermajority in the Indiana Statehouse, on March 26, Stephanie Jo Yocum officially announced her campaign for Indiana State Representative for District 88, which includes parts of Hamilton, Madison, Hancock, and Marion counties.

Speaking to a standing-room-only crowd, Yocum heralded the need for more balanced representation.

“A Statehouse that more accurately reflects the thoughts and needs of all Hoosiers will result in better policy,” Yocum said.

She presented her support of public education, reproductive rights, and the Second Amendment aligned with public safety.

“Our current Representative [State Rep. Chris Jeter] represents the most extreme in politics; we can, and we will find a more balanced path forward for our state,” Yocum said.

A daughter of a school teacher and a police officer, public service was a consistent feature of Yocum’s upbringing. She followed her parents’ example joining the AmeriCorps after college, and she has continued her dedication to public service, leading large non-profits focused on healthcare and education. She currently serves as the Chair of the governor-appointed commission on volunteerism and service, Serve Indiana.

Community leaders shared their excitement about Yocum’s decision to run for House District 88. Indianapolis City-County Councilor Nick Roberts, who represents the Marion County portion of District 88, spoke at the event.

“I am proud to support Stephanie Jo Yocum as my State Representative,” Roberts said. “She’s a leader in our community and I’ve been fortunate to get to know her over the past year. Her experiences and policy goals will make her a phenomenal legislator.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to officially announce my campaign,” Yocum said. “Our state deserves a positive strong path forward. My family and I love living in District 88, we love Indiana, and I will do everything I can to support the wellbeing of all Hoosiers.”
