The Hamilton Southeastern wrestling team took on a tough Avon squad at the Orioles’ gym on Tuesday, but prevailed 40-35 in a dual meet.
Both teams won seven matches, with bonus points the key to the Royals’ victory. Southeastern won six of its seven matches by fall. Charlie Irish started the meet with a pin at 285 pounds, but Avon took over after that by winning the next five bouts, going up 26-6.
The Royals began their comeback by winning three matches in a row. Zach Lang started it off with a fall at 138 pounds, then Ryan Hartig took a major decision at 145 and Nick Jakubs was victorious by fall at 152. Southeastern led 26-22, but a pin at 160 pounds pushed the Orioles back up 32-22.
The Royals took care of business in the next three bouts, claiming all three by fall. The winners were Ryan Cast at 170, Zach Wagner at 182 and Max Broom at 195. With that, Southeastern held an unsurmountable 40-32 lead; Avon took the final match of the night by decision, but the Royals’ victory was assured.
Southeastern will also travel to Westfield on Saturday to wrestle in the Shamrock Duals.
