Wrestling: Rocks are solid at Columbus North Invitational, several boys & girls teams compete around state

The Westfield boys wrestling team put together a solid performance at the Columbus North Invitational last Saturday.

The Shamrocks dominated pool competition, beating Brown County 78-6, Westfield 68-12 and Bloomington North 63-12. In the championship bracket, Westfield defeated Cascade 47-27 in the semifinals before dropping a close final match to the host Bull Dogs 42-39.

Three Shamrocks wrestlers finished 5-0 for the event: Porter Temples at 120 pounds, Chase Camire at 132 and Hunter Jones at 175. Westfield’s 4-1 wrestlers were Keegan Carson at 106, Abe O’Neill at 113, Jake Saez at 138, Hank Temples at 144 and Aiden Padgett at 285.

Eli Turner (157), Hunter Lancaster (165), Riley Davison (190) and Alex Aramboles (215) all were 3-2 for the tournament. Graydon Staley was 2-3 at 150 pounds. Westfield had two wrestlers compete at 126: Alic Washburn was 2-0 and Carter Niccum was 2-1.

Hamilton Southeastern’s boys placed second at the Clinton Prairie Invitational last Saturday.

The Royals scored 242.5 points, behind only Terre Haute South, the champion with 287 points. Southeastern had three place winners: Tyler Jackson at 113 pounds, Chris Casler at 144 and Zach Lang at 157. Three more Southeastern wrestlers were runners-up: Will Lakes at 106, De Shawn Ternoir at 190 and Evan Lawhead at 215.

Also placing were Max Inman (third at 132), Adam Gerstner (third at 150), Cohen Davis (fourth at 165), Aidan Smalley (fifth at 120) and Xander Huynh (sixth at 126). Landon Hicks (175) and Isaac Williams (285) both won two matches and Matthew Billet (at 138) had one win.

The Sheridan boys wrestling team competed at the Frankfort Duals last Saturday.

The Blackhawks went 1-4 for the tournament. Sheridan beat Shelbyville 54-18, while dropping duals to Kokomo 54-30, Parke Heritage 39-36, Lebanon 69-6 and Frankfort 48-36.

Ryker Ream had the best record on the day, going 4-1 at 165 pounds. Each Blackhawks wrestler won at least one match: Caleb Alexander (126), Trai Fitzgerald (132), Alex Cravens (150), Zach Bales (175), Jaden Dunbar (190) and Carsen Aleman (285) all went 3-2. Aiden Todd (120) and Eli Bales (157) got two victories and Pablo Mendez (138) and Timmy Vyner (215) both had one win.

Several county girls teams competed at the fifth annual Lebanon Invitational last Saturday.

Noblesville placed 18th as a team, the highest local finish. Kyra Tomlinson placed first at 130 pounds “B,” while Brooke Butler was the runner-up at 135. Also placing were Sophia Teitsma (fourth at 125A), Jordan Stevens (sixth at 120A) and Eden Short (seventh at 130). Tahira Gibson won a match at 125.

Carmel took 25th, with all five of the Greyhounds’ wrestlers placing. Grace Sharp was second at 120A, Daniela Ramirez took third at 155A, Grace Marshall finished third at 190A, Josie Belloti took seventh at 170 “A” and Alisha Calcuttawala was eighth at 145A.

Hamilton Heights finished 30th as a team. Aubrey Baber led the Huskies by taking third at 115A, followed by Kelsee Powers placing fourth at 135 and Amaelia Cordero-Ballinger also taking fourth at 170. Nicole Edwards was sixth at 155 and Ella Smith Reynolds was eighth at 130.

Sheridan took 44th and had two place winners. Adrianna Hammersly took sixth with a 3-2 record at 125 pounds, while Eva Todd was 2-3 at 140 pounds for eighth place. Devyn Pewarski (at 140) and Claudia Headlee (at 190) both won one match.

Guerin Catholic’s boys team traveled to Columbus last Saturday for the Columbus North Invitational.

While the Golden Eagles were short-handed, there were several bright spots, including an unbeaten performance by 126-pounder Peter Nguyen. He won all five of his matches, getting three pins, a technical fall and a decision. Sam Wagner (at 132) and Drew Stevenson (at 138) both won a match against Brown County.
