Hamilton Southeastern dropped a very tough dual meet on Wednesday night, falling to Hoosier Crossroads Conference rival Zionsville 35-31.
The meet began at 113 pounds, and the teams traded pins to start. The Eagles won at 113, but Jacob Simone got a first-period fall at 120. Simone is unbeaten for the year at 7-0.
Freshman Nick Burris won at 126 pounds by decision, 4-2, to put Southeastern on top 9-6. After that, Zionsville won five of the next six matches to lead 29-12. Senior Reece Luhmann was a Royals winner in the middle of that, with a decision victory at 145 pounds.
Sophomore Max Broom broke the Zionsville string with a first-period fall in the 182-pound match; Broom is also undefeated for the season with a 7-0 record. Zionsville won the 195-pound bout with a pin to go up 35-18.
The Royals won out after that. Devin Dudley took the 220-pound match by decision, Andrew Irick (in his season debut) won at 285 by major decision, then Mat Benson received a forfeit at 106.
“In a night where everything that could have gone wrong did, the Royals were still right there against a great team,” said Southeastern coach Nick Brobst. “They’ll recover and be back on the mat this weekend at the Plainfield Invitational before making their home debut on Tuesday of next week against Noblesville.”
