Wrestling: Carmel wins at North Montgomery, county has several semi-state qualifiers

The Carmel wrestling team kept its regional streak going on Saturday, as the Greyhounds triumphed for the fourth consecutive time at the North Montgomery regional.
Carmel scored 175 points, putting the ‘Hounds solidly ahead of runner-up Zionsville’s 136.5 points. It’s the 19th regional title for Carmel’s program, tying it for seventh place with Portage on the all-time list.
Equally important, the Greyhounds qualified 10 wrestlers for next Saturday’s New Castle semi-state. The top four in each weight class advance to the semi-state, and Carmel had 10 wrestlers finished in the top three.
The Greyhounds had three champions, starting with Tamir Halevi at 106 pounds. The sophomore beat Westfield’s Chase Camire in the final with a first-period pin.
Junior Gavin Thompson followed at 113, and he delivered a title for Carmel with a 6-5 decision over Zionsville sophomore Tommy Frazier. Junior Isaac Ward became the Greyhounds’ third champion by winning at 126 in a tough 3-1 decision over Fishers junior Griffin Ingalls.
Five more Carmel wrestlers placed second in their respective divisions: Caleb Mattingly at 120, Michael Major at 132, Nayl Sbay at 145, Eitan Halevin at 152 and Nathan Powell at 160. The Greyhounds’ third-place finishers were Luke Farling at 138 and Jack Milligan at 285.
Hamilton Southeastern finished a strong third as a team, scoring 127 points. The Royals advanced nine to the semi-state, including two champions.
Senior Ryan Cast won for Southeastern at 170 pounds cruising to a 12-2 major decision over Rossville freshman Noah Weaver. Another Royals senior, Max Broom, took the 195-pound title with an 11-7 decision against Frankfort senior Kyle Zickmund.
Southeastern had three runners-up at the meet: Zach Lang at 138, Charlie Irish at 220 and Dom Burgett at 285. Ryan Hartig placed third at 145. The Royals then had three more wrestlers place fourth: Nick Anderson at 113, Riley Fredericksen at 132 and De Shawn Ternoir at 160.
Westfield placed fourth in the team standings by scoring 122 points. The Shamrocks qualified eight out to the semi-state and had three champions as well.
Senior Braxton Vest dominated at 120 pounds, winning all three of his matches by fall. Ike O’Neill was the 138-pound champion, beating Lang in an 8-1 final-round decision. At 285 pounds, Mihail Platonov edged out Burgett for the win, by a 1-0 decision.
After Camire’s runner-up finish, three more Westfield wrestlers placed third: Porter Temples at 113, Thadeus O’Neill at 132 and Jason Rooney at 152. Austin McClure took fourth at 182.
Fishers placed fifth by scoring 50 points and advanced four to semi-state. Ingalls had the Tigers’ highest finish as the 126-pound runner-up. Chayce Yant (at 106) and Quenton Riley (at 120) both placed third, with Zachary Strueder taking fourth at 145.
Sheridan scored 41 points to finish seventh. Peyton Cross won at 220 pounds with a 9-0 major decision, while Jacob Jones placed second at 182; both advance to the semi-state.

Hamilton Heights finished second at the Pendleton Heights regional on Saturday, with two champions and seven wrestlers advancing to the New Castle semi-state.
The Huskies scored 93 points; Cathedral ran away with the team title by scoring 233.5 points. Freshman Michael Cain picked up the first Heights title by winning at 145 pounds, getting past Lawrence North junior Romeo White in a 16-14 decision.
Huskies junior Evan Tilton breezed to the 182-pound championship, receiving a forfeit to reach the semi-finals, then winning his next two matches by fall. Tilton is still unbeaten for the season at 42-0.
Isaac Kuhn placed second at 120 pounds, while Josh Brown took third at 220. Heights had three additional fourth-place finishers: Carson Fettig at 138, Charles Brown at 160 and Jimmy Lacey at 170.
Noblesville tied for fifth at the regional by scoring 54 points, and qualified six wrestlers to semi-state. Sophomore Austin Hastings led the way for the Millers, as he won the 195-pound title with a 6-5 decision over Cathedral senior Grayson Harvey.
Five other Noblesville wrestlers placed fourth to advance to semi-state. They are Gage Gulley at 145, Carter Richardson at 152, Seth Stone at 182, Jacob Long at 220 and Jacob Etchison at 285.
Guerin Catholic scored 11 points as a team and had one wrestler qualify for semi-state: Sophomore Peter Nguyen took fourth at 113 pounds.
