The Carmel wrestling team won an all-county dual meet with Westfield on Wednesday, beating the Shamrocks 48-12 at the Carmel Fieldhouse.
The first half of the meet was close, with the Greyhounds winning four of the first seven matches. Carmel opened with 220-pounder Haakon Von Beynen (rated 16th by IndianaMat.com) getting a decision victory, then Westfield’s Mike Platanov picked up a decision win in overtime.
The ‘Hounds took the next two matches, including a fall from third-ranked Suhas Chundi at 106 and a tough 1-0 decision at 113 from Brac Hooper over Dylan Driver in a battle of ranked wrestlers. Hooper is sixth and Driver is 16th in the IndianaMat.com rankings.
Westfield’s Carson Eldred was next at 120, and the No. 4-ranked Eldred won by major decision, 14-3. Carmel responded with a win by fall from Joey Langeman at 126, then Milo Merkel got a technical fall for the Shamrocks in the 132-pound bout.
At that point, the Greyhounds led 18-12. But after that, Carmel dominated, winning the next seven matches. That included a first-period pin for No. 6 Brendan Mattingly at 138 pounds, a major decision for No. 8 Gabe Davin at 170, a pin for No. 13 Garrett Sharp at 182 and a 5-4 decision win for No. 10 Zach White at 195 pounds.
“Late in the year, sectional opponent, this is a nice one to be wrestling well,” said Greyhounds coach Ed Pendoski. The coach said he put 11 seniors on the mat against Westfield.
“We put on our seniors after the Perry Meridian Duals in December to wrestle happy,” said Pendoski. Just be emotionally excited about what’s going on. Our group of guys from Chundi, Langeman, Mattingly, Sharp, Van Beynen have done a really good job of staying engaged. And so as we’ve done that, we’re having fun.”
“I think let down a couple matches and lost about every match that was close, so we did not wrestle well, or not wrestle to our ability by any stretch of the imagination,” said Westfield coach Phil Smith.
Both teams will focus on their conference meets, which take place on Saturday. The Greyhounds travel to Lawrence North for the Metropolitan Conference meet, while Westfield heads to Noblesville for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet.

Hamilton Southeastern scored a big victory at Lawrence North on Wednesday, beating the Wildcats 51-29 in a dual meet.
The Royals were without six of their starters due to injuries and illness, but the young group responded. Sophomore Ryan Hartig began the meet by receiving a forfeit win at 120 pounds. After two quick LN victories (by fall and technical fall), Southeastern trailed 11-6, but things turned in a hurry.
Junior Jake Lemieux won his 22nd match of the season by fall at 138. Senior Cam Roberts also got a pin in the 145-pound bout. Trevon Ternoir made it three falls in a row for HSE, winning at 152 pounds for his fourth victory in six varsity matches this season.
The Royals continued their run with sophomore Ryan Cast winning a 2-0 decision at 160 pounds. Cast scored his points in the second period with a reversal and held the top position for three full minutes to get the victory. Charlie Irish (at 170) and Max Broom (at 182) then got falls to give Southeastern a 39-11 lead.
The Wildcats took the next two matches by fall, but Andrew Irick stopped the run. Irick, ranked second at 285 pounds, earned the victory with the 61st fall of his career, a record. Mat Benson won the 106-pound match by forfeit, then LN won at 113 by pin to finish the match.
“Couldn’t be more proud of the way this young team responded when many starters were out,” said Royals coach Nick Brobst.
