What you need to know to pursue a career in transportation engineering

The latest episode of American Structurepoint’s Making Our Point podcast explores transportation engineering as a career choice. This is the fourth in a series of podcasts that focus on the different types of engineering to help young adults determine whether engineering is right for them.

American Structurepoint Vice President/Partner and National Transportation Director Ben Borcherding shares examples of projects transportation engineers often tackle. Transportation engineering focuses on the planning and design of roads, bridges, rail lines, bus lines, and systems to help people move safely and efficiently. Borcherding provides excellent insights for people considering a transportation engineering career, such as qualifications needed, what to expect when entering the field, career paths and salary ranges for transportation engineers and more. American Structurepoint Executive Vice President and Partner Steve Davidson hosts the podcast.

Transportation engineers help solve complex transportation needs with innovative solutions. Transportation engineering is a very stable industry, and it’s growing. There are vast infrastructure needs and money allocated to communities and state departments of transportation across the country. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act provides up to $1.2 trillion in federal funding, which is the biggest investment in infrastructure in the country’s history.

“Transportation engineers are in great need,” Borcherding said. “The latest stats show that more than 40 percent of the nation’s roads are in poor or mediocre condition. The U.S. has more than four million miles of public roads and 617,000 bridges that need repair, and we’re currently seeing a lot of investment in improving our roads and bridges.”
