Westfield Police Department to hold two forums on e-bikes, dirt bikes, golf carts & off-road vehicle laws

The Westfield Police Department invites residents to attend one of two upcoming community forums focused on Indiana laws and ordinances governing e-bikes, dirt bikes, golf carts, and other off-road vehicles.

The first will be held on Wednesday, July 1 and the second will be held on Wednesday, July 15. Both forums will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. at Westfield High School, 18250 N. Union St., in the main auditorium.

As the popularity of these vehicles continues to grow throughout the community, the Westfield Police Department offers these educational sessions to help residents better understand where vehicles may legally operate, who may operate them, and how riders can safely share public spaces.

“Many parents and riders are surprised to learn that different vehicles are governed by different laws and restrictions,” Police Chief Shawn Keen said. “These forums are an opportunity for our officers to provide clear, accurate information, answer questions, and help families make informed decisions that keep everyone safe. Our goal is education, awareness and promoting responsible operation throughout the community.”

During the forums, officers will provide information on:

• The different classes of e-bikes and their legal definitions
• Who may legally operate each class of e-bike
• Where e-bikes and golf carts may be operated under Indiana law and/or ordinances
• Regulations governing dirt bikes and off-road vehicles
• Where dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles may and may not be operated
• Safety considerations for riders and the community
• Common violations and enforcement concerns
• Opportunities for questions and answers with law enforcement personnel

Each presentation will last approximately one hour and include a question-and-answer session. No RSVP is required.

The forums are intended for residents of all ages. Parents, guardians, grandparents, and youth riders are encouraged to attend, as the information presented may impact multiple members of a household. By increasing awareness and understanding of current laws, the Westfield Police Department hopes to promote safe and responsible operation of these vehicles throughout the community.
