Westfield Lions turn city favor into friendly holiday competition

Submitted

The Westfield Lions Club was asked by the City of Westfield to decorate a couple roundabouts for the holiday season. The Lions accepted the assignment to transform the circles at 151st Street and Carey Road and at 151st Street and Market Center Road, just west of Gray Road, into a Christmas wonderland.

And, as Lions are prone to do – or as they say, “boys will be boys” – it all turned into a competition. Past Lion president Dave Sobczak, a local developer and builder, volunteered to head up Team Sobzak and tackle the 151st and Carey location, while Lion Secretary Jeff Larrison, a sales engineer with a company that actually designs traffic circles, headed up Team Larrison to transform the 151st and Market Center setting.

Naturally the Christmas decorating immediately delved into holiday trash talk, and then sank further to a challenge of which team did the better job. Hark! A wager thus ensued, with the losing team being made to sing Christmas carols at the winner’s venue at a time to be announced.

Several Lions donned safety vests and picked the team they thought would be most victorious and lights and ornaments, literally, started to fly.

As would be expected, no criteria for judging was set, no gauge of goodness, just “Mine is better than yours!” It is assumed it will all fall to perhaps the most sensible Lion of all, the Westfield Lions Club’s first woman president, Anna Skinner, to select the winner.

In truth, fun was had by all and the Westfield Lions Club wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, a safe holiday and a Happy New Year! May 2021 be an improvement over this year.
