West Lafayette overwhelms Huskies

Hamilton Heights finally got to play its first home game of the season on Friday, but they had to deal with a tough visitor in West Lafayette.
The Class 3A No. 2 Red Devils beat Heights 49-14. West Lafayette scored its first touchdown late in the first quarter, then poured in 28 points in the second quarter. Max Mullis had two rushing touchdowns, with Sam Schott scoring on a pass play and then on a late 70-yard interception return.
West Lafayette led 35-0 at halftime, then extended the advantage to 42-0 midway through the third period. The Huskies got on the board with 2:40 left in the third when Caleb Schakel took off on a 65-yard run to the end zone.
The Red Devils began the fourth quarter with another touchdown, but Heights kept fighting. Trey Ehman scored on a six-yard rushing touchdown with four minutes left in the game. Michael Lecher kicked both extra points.
Schakel’s 65-yard run was his only rush of the game, but it made him the Huskies’ rushing leader. Ehman totaled 48 yards and also had two catches. Vincent Harley stepped in as quarterback, and completed 5 of 11 passes for 44 yards.
Heights is 0-3 for the season. The Huskies will play their first Hoosier Conference East Division game next Friday at Northwestern.
