September 24, 1935 – June 12, 2025
Mary Evangline “Vangie” Vescovi, 89, Carmel, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Born on September 24, 1935, in Trementina, N.M, daughter of Paul and Augustina (Tenoria) Blea.
A woman of deep Catholic faith and quiet strength, Vangie devoted her life to loving and caring for others – both in her personal life and in her professional calling. As a mother of six, she had a remedy for every ailment and a listening ear for every concern. Her laughter was infectious, and her presence comforting. Despite facing many of her own challenges, she bore them with grace and never complained.
Vangie earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from Indiana University – Indianapolis while in her mid-fifties – an achievement that filled her and her family with pride. Her work at IU Health was not just a profession but a vocation. She was drawn to those in pain, and she offered compassion, wisdom, and genuine care.
A lifetime member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Vangie found joy and companionship in her parish community, especially through her involvement in “Solo Seniors” and “Prime Life.” Her spiritual journey was enriched by a meaningful pilgrimage to Israel, a highlight she often cherished and shared with her friends and family.
Vangie treasured the simple joys of life: attending summer concerts at the Gazebo in Carmel, going to the movies, dining out with friends, and especially celebrating Mother’s Day dinners at Benihana restaurant with her children. Family gatherings brought her the greatest happiness – holidays filled with laughter, love, and the lively presence of her grandchildren. She also held dear the time spent visiting her extended family in Memphis.
In addition to her parents, Vangie was preceded in death by her sisters, Casilda and Anita; and beloved grandson, Nicholas Gavin.
Survivors include her children; Sabrina (John) Gavin, Vickie Vescovi, Tina Lasley, Greg Vescovi, Rex (Julie) Vescovi, and Katrina (Deron) Scalf; grandchildren; Kyle Gavin, Kaelyn Gavin, Xavier Vescovi, Sierra Lasley, Alex Vescovi, Michael Schmaltz, Riley Schmaltz, and Thomas Rodgriguez.
Her legacy of love, strength, and faith will live on in each of them.
Family and friends will gather from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2025, in St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.
A Committal Service will follow in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Indianapolis.
