Four players scored in double figures as the Class 2A No. 5 University Trailblazers rolled to an easy 71-43 win over La Porte LaLumiere Blue Tuesday night at The U Center.
Sabien Cain led the way for the Trailblazers with 22 points and a team high four assists. Rob Russell had 12 points and Bryce Gray and Kahmi Bracey had 10 points each. Bracey pulled down six rebounds. Andre Ozlowski had a fine all-around game with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair that ended with Cain hitting a three pointer with two seconds left to put University in front for good at 13-10. Cain had six points in the period.
University controlled the second quarter, building a 31-18 halftime lead on Gray’s three pointer from the right corner as time expired. The Blazers ended any doubt scoring the first seven points of the third quarter to build a 38-18 lead just two minutes in to the second half. The Lakers could not get closer than 16 points the rest of the game and University led by as many as 31 early in the fourth quarter.
The Blazers had a big crowd on their annual Blue Bash Night when incoming freshmen are welcomed to the school and the team used that energy according the coach Brandon Lafferman. “I really loved our energy tonight. We had a packed gym and I thought we fed off that crowd really well. We had a lot of guys score tonight, really balanced scoring. I thought our defensive pressure was outstanding. I’m very proud of Kahmi Bracey, Andre Ozlowski, Steven Scott and Seth Hogg and their continued senior leadership. Now we get ready for our conference championship game Saturday.”
University, champions of the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference North Division will host South Division champion Park Tudor Saturday night for the conference championship. The Blazers are the five-time defending conference champions and will carry a 15-1 record in to the game.
