University picked up a pair of wins Saturday and brought home the Kopper Kettle Classic championship trophy with wins over Tri-Central (61-37) and Henryville (86-24) at Morristown.
Seniors Payton Seay and Kelsey DuBois led the way for the Trailblazers. Seay had 55 points and 13 rebounds on the day, while DuBois had 30 points and 20 rebounds.
University outscored Tri-Central 27-7 in the last 11:30 of the championship game to pull away from the scrappy Lady Trojans.
University jumped to a 10-0 lead against Tri-Central in the championship game and held a double-digit lead through most of the first half. The Blazers led 32-18 early in the third period before Tri-Central scored seven straight to climb back in the game. After Seay got a buck for University, the Lady Trojans hit a three pointer with 3:30 left to pull within 34-30.
The Blazers then began to reassert control. DuBois fed Seay for a basket and then added a pair of foul shots for a 38-30 lead. Kamryn Washington had a steal and pushed the ball ahead to Anyah Jordan-Turley for a layin. Washington hit a buzzer beating runner in the lane to give University a 42-32 lead after the third.
University scored seven points in the first 57 seconds of the fourth quarter to put the lead back out to 17. Washington fed DuBois on the block for an old fashioned three-point play before Seay had a steal and layin. Two more Seay free throws made it 49-32 before a Tri-Central three pointer. University held the Lady Trojans scoreless for the next five minutes to remove all doubt about the outcome.
Seay had 25 points and eight rebounds against Tri-Central. DuBois had 15 points and corralled nine rebounds. Jordan Patterson had a team high five assists to go with eight points. Alex Feeney came off the bench for seven points and a team high six steals.
University dominated Henryville in the morning game, scoring nine points in the first minute of the game. Seay had a career high 30 points, including 20 in the first quarter as the Blazers led 36-7 after the opening period. Seay’s 20 points in a quarter tie for the sixth most in IHSAA history per the Hickory Husker Book of Indiana High School Basketball Records.
Two other Blazers had double doubles in the game. Washington had career highs with 11 points and 11 assists. DuBois had 15 points and 11 rebounds, adding six block shots.
Kiera Bright led with four steals.
University brought home a pair of trophies from Morristown as the junior varsity Trailblazers beat Henryville and Purdue Poly Technical to capture the junior varsity tournament.
University is now 3-0 on the season. The Blazers will play their home opener Wednesday against Danville at The U Center.
