University beats both out-of-state competitors at 2024 Summer Prep

University picked up two wins Friday at the 2024 Super Prep at Louisville Ballard High School.

In their first game, the Trailblazers beat host Ballard 6-5 in six innings. The Bruins scored all five of their runs in the second inning. University began its comeback with three runs in the third inning: Les Carroll scored on Owen Schellhase’s sacrifice fly, then Ryan Castetter doubled in Jasper Owens and Cooper Burnett to get the ‘Blazers within 5-3.

Burnett tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-out, two-run home run. Carroll also scored after getting on base with a single. In the fifth inning, Beckett Suh got on base with a two-out walk, then Jimmy Caldwell smacked a triple into left field to bring Suh home and put University in front.

Carroll had two hits for the ‘Blazers. Caleb Stocker got the pitching win, tossing seven strikeouts over five innings.

University breezed past Greenon 12-0 in four innings for its second win of the day.

Castetter provided the offensive highlights, hitting two home runs. His first was a solo homer into right field in the first inning. Castetter then blasted a three-run homer in the third inning, part of a nine-run inning for the Trailblazers. Earlier in the inning, Castetter singled in a run, giving him five RBIs for the game; he finished with three hits and three runs.

Owens, Schellhase and Cooper Cammack all had two hits, while Schellhase and Caldwell both scored two runs. Schellhase also drove in two runs. Mark Hamby hit a third-inning double. Laine Spears got the pitching win, with four strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings.

University is 2-1 and finishes play at the Super Prep today by taking on Boyd-Buchanan.
