A shorthanded Sheridan team dropped its first game of the season Friday, falling to Tri-Central 21-0 at Bud Wright Stadium.
The Class 1A No. 9 Blackhawks, playing their first Hoosier Heartland Conference game of the season, were without 12 players for various reasons, but coach Bud Wright wasn’t interested in excuses after the game, saying he was “really, really disappointed” with some of the performances.
“I thought we’d perform a lot better and just didn’t do it,” said Wright.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, but the Trojans, who are undefeated for the season at 3-0, put up 14 points in the second period, then added another touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was the first time Sheridan had been shut out in a game since Oct. 26, 2018, when it fell to Monroe Central in the sectional semi-finals.
Cameron Hovey led the Blackhawks’ offense, with 109 yards in 25 carries. Evan Grinstead caught Sheridan’s lone pass of the game, a 17-yarder from Cale Cummings.
“We just got to go from here,” said Wright. “I don’t know how many kids we’ll have out next week.”
Sheridan travels to Delphi next Friday to continue Hoosier Heartland play. Kickoff for that game will be at 7:30 p.m.
