University boys opened their home season Saturday night at The U Center with a 61-45 win over Greenwood Christian Academy to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Trailblazers came out firing, jumping to a 25-13 lead after the first quarter. The Blazers never trailed in the contest, taking the lead for good 58 seconds in to the game on a Sabien Cain three pointer from the right corner off a Kahmi Bracey assist. Andre Ozlowski scored on a pair of reverse layings before Rob Russell made the score 11-7. Cain and Bryce Gray added two three pointers each in a 11-4 University run to close the period.
The scoring pace slowed in the second quarter but the Blazers added to their lead and led 36-22 at halftime. Ozlowski’s 12-footer off an offensive rebound at the third-quarter buzzer gave the Trailblazers their first 20-point lead of the night at 49-29 and the Blazers coasted home.
Coach Brandon Lafferman was proud of his team’s effort. “We really followed the game plan we worked on in practice. Our focus was there from the beginning. Our ball movement was outstanding. We played a really good game as a team.”
“I thought Sabien did a good job with the pressure they put on him and keeping his cool and getting everyone else involved in the offense,” Lafferman concluded.
Cain led University with 19 points and Ozlowski had 16. Gray had nine points and Russell eight.
University’s Friday game at Shenandoah was postponed due to illness in the Raiders program. The reschedule date has yet to be determined. The Blazers have a pair of games next weekend, travelling to Indianapolis Scecina on Friday before starting PAAC North play against Liberty Christian Saturday at The U Center.
