FISHERS – Westfield boys track & field coach Roger Wachtel said that at Thursday’s IHSAA sectional meet at Fishers, his Shamrocks were “just doing their jobs and trying to advance to the regional.”

Westfield not only did its job well, but got a nice little bonus: the Shamrocks’ first-ever sectional championship trophy. Westfield edged out Hamilton Southeastern for the team title, with the Shamrocks scoring 112 points to the Royals’ 111 points.

Westfield claimed first place in four individual events and qualified eight performances to next week’s regional, which takes place next Thursday at Lafayette Jefferson, with several others likely to get callbacks to the regional. The top three in each event advances to regional.

Wachtel said his Shamrocks are “a very deep team this year.”

“We have some areas where we’re not very strong,” said Wachtel. “We also have some areas where we’re very strong. The 4×1, obviously, is a great relay right now. Our 4×4 is a great relay.”

Both those relays finished first. The 4×100 team of Caleb Terril, Cayden Gearheart, Cato June and Logan Tuck cruised to victory in a new sectional meet record time of 41.83 seconds. Terril picked up another relay win as part of the 4×400, joining Caleb Haney, Maxim Poirier and Will Snedeker for first place.

The relay victory was also Snedeker’s second of the night, as he claimed the 800 run. Then there was Logan Tuck. He also won a close race, clocking in at 14.67 seconds to win the 110 hurdles. Wachtel called Tuck’s victory “huge.”

“Before the season starts, nobody knows who Logan Tuck is,” said Wachtel. The coach credited Tuck with getting better as the season went on.

“He qualified for indoor state and we thought that was a big deal,” said Wachtel. “But he’s just continued to improve over the course of the year. He’s a revelation, honestly, for us.”

The Royals finished with five victories and qualified 11 to the regional. Southeastern opened the meet with Will Henning, Omar Elsayed, Liam McNiven and Mason Schmitz winning the 4×800 relay. Christian Ortiz was first in the 400 dash, then Sam Long was the 300 hurdles winner. Liam Powers won the 3200 run, while Evan Senefeld cleared 14 feet to place first in the pole vault.

Carmel finished third with 97.5 points. Isaac Nelson won a very fast 100 dash, clocking in at 10.75 seconds. Ozzy Pollard triumphed in the discus. The Greyhounds advanced seven to the regional.

Fishers placed a close fourth, scoring 97 points. Mason Cantwell finished first in the shot put and will be one of eight regional qualifiers for the Tigers.

Noblesville finished a strong fifth, totaling 84 points. The Millers picked up two wins, first from Jack Strong in the 1600 run. Angel Wilson triumphed in the 200 dash. Noblesville advanced seven on to the regional.

Guerin Catholic will send two on to Lafayette. Hayden Cler finished second in the 400 dash, while James Moody was the 200 dash runner-up. Hamilton Heights’ Will Duncan placed second in the shot put, moving him on to the regional.

Sheridan scored 10 points, all coming from Damon Winston. The Blackhawks senior won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches, sending him on to the regional.

NOTE: The Reporter will publish a full list of callback or both the boys and girls regionals in an upcoming edition.
