TODAY: Marian University & Ascension St. Vincent’s ‘Come Explore Nursing’ event

Individuals interested in pursuing a nursing career are invited to learn about educational opportunities and meet healthcare professionals at the annual “Come Explore Nursing” event hosted by Marian University’s Leighton School of Nursing and Ascension St. Vincent.

The free open house event will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 5, in the main lobby of Ascension St. Vincent, 2001 W. 86th St., Indianapolis. It’s open to anyone considering a career in nursing, including high school and college students exploring career options, as well as professionals interested in changing careers.

Those interested in attending can meet with Marian University’s faculty, admissions staff, students, and Ascension St. Vincent’s nursing leadership. Attendees will also learn about Marian University’s nursing programs, including the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Accelerated BSN, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs.

“This event offers participants the chance to discover the many rewards of becoming a nurse,” said Angela Bailey, site director of Marian University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

A growing field & pathway to prosperity

Nursing remains one of the most in-demand professions nationwide. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 5 percent increase in the need for nurses through 2034, faster than the average for all occupations. There is also a persistent need for nurses in Indiana, Bailey said, with the Hoosier state operating at about 72 percent of the nurses it needs, according to recent data.

A career in nursing is also a pathway to prosperity. Data from the Labor Department show that the median annual wage for registered nurses in the United States is $93,600, compared with $49,500 for all occupations. Those pursuing advanced degrees can earn even more: up to $132,050 annually.

Marian University is preparing students for the field with programs including:

  • Traditional BSN: A campus program offered as a four-year degree.
  • Accelerated BSN: A 16-month program that combines online coursework with hands-on labs and clinical rotations. Through its partnership with Ascension St. Vincent, Marian University provides a unique opportunity to transition careers without starting over.
  • DNP: A hybrid platform program for BSN-prepared registered nurses at the highest level seeking advanced clinical practice and leadership roles. Both Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) tracks are available.
