Tigers split doubleheader with Zionsville

The Fishers baseball team split a doubleheader with Zionsville on Friday to begin its Hoosier Crossroads Conference season.

The Eagles won the first game 1-0, scoring their run on an error in the seventh inning. The Tigers got an incredible effort from pitcher Zach Brown, who struck out 12 in a complete game, allowing just two hits and two walks.

Brown also had two hits at the plate, with Ben Hammond getting one hit.

Fishers turned things around in Game 2, beating Zionsville 11-7.

The Eagles scored a run in the first inning, holding that 1-0 lead through the third inning. The Tigers got on the board in a fourth-inning rush, putting up five runs. Evan Doran batted in Jack Brown, Huston Dunn scored on a balk, Jase Ruggles bunted in Doran on a fielder’s choice, and Caulin Brown’s left field single brought in Ruggles and Trevor Hall.

Zionsville singled in a run during the bottom of the fourth, then added four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Fishers grabbed the lead back in the top of the sixth after Hammond and Hall scored on an error.

The Eagles got another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 7-7. The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the seventh. Deagan Repp got home on a wild pitch, Hall singled in Owen Lukac and Dunn, then Ruggles blasted a double to score Doran.

Mayo Fernandez hit a seventh-inning double, while Hall finished with two hits. Hammond pitched the final two innings for the win, tossing three strikeouts. Starter Gavin Kuzniewski threw four and two-thirds innings, striking out five.

Fishers began conference play 1-1 and is 4-3 overall. The Tigers play at Mount Vernon today in another doubleheader.
