The Hoosier Crossroads Conference announced its Athletes of the Year for the winter sports season Friday. Three Hamilton County athletes were among those who received the award in their respective sports.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Maya Makalusky, Hamilton Southeastern
Senior Maya Makalusky has been named the HCC Athlete of the Year for Girls Basketball by a vote of the conference coaches.
Makalusky was a four-year starter who led the Royals to three consecutive HCC titles. During that three-year span, HSE went 20-1 in the extremely competitive Hoosier Crossroads Conference. Maya’s Royals went a remarkable 83-16 during her career.
Maya led Hamilton Southeastern to sectional and regional titles this year while averaging 22.1 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game, shot 40 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line. She finished her career as the all-time leading scorer at Hamilton Southeastern with 1,933 points. That point total places her second on the all-time HCC scoring list.
Makalusky was named 1st team All HCC three consecutive years. In addition, Maya was recently named the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year.
Coach Brian Satterfield states, “to watch her overall game grow this past year was tremendous as she led us in nine statistical categories. Opposing teams threw every defense designed to try to slow her down, but she still played within the system and competed to help our team win. Her leadership and willingness to sacrifice for the team is what makes her truly special. She has left a legacy that many future Royals will try to replicate.” Maya will continue her education and basketball career at Indiana University.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Emily Wolf, Fishers
Sophomore Emily Wolf has been selected by the HCC Swim/Dive coaches as the Athlete of the Year.
At the HCC meet, Wolf was the individual champion in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Emily also earned All HCC honors as a freshman.
At the IHSAA State Championship Meet at the IU Natatorium, Emily won the 500 free, finished second in the 100 butterfly and was a member of the third-place 400 free relay team and the seventh-place 200 medley relay team.
Coach Joe Keller says, “last year Emily laid a foundation of meeting high expectations in being State Runner-up in the 100 Fly behind an Olympian. This year, her preparation and training elevated her potential to the next level. Being State Runner-up in the 100 Fly and then earning a State Title in the 500 Free is a double with the event list that can only happen if preparation has occurred. She is developing an approach and mindset that will lead herself and others to being great….not just good. This is the type of leadership that will push other female athletes within the HCC to grow our conference to greater heights in the future!”
BOYS SWIMMING
Jonny Hines, Fishers
Senior Jonny Hines of Fishers has been selected as the Athlete of the Year by the HCC Swim/Dive coaches.
At the HCC Meet, Hines won the 200 free and the 500 free, setting a new HCC record in the latter (4:31.20). Jonny was also a part of the 200 free and 400 free championship relay teams. In his career, Hines earned All HCC honors twice.
At the IHSAA State meet, Hines finished second in the 200 free and third in the 500 free while anchoring both the 200 free relay (second) and the 400 free relay (seventh) teams.
Coach Joe Keller says, “this is a great honor for Jonny and representative of so many athletes that work hard to develop their craft. This sport, along with the support of the HCC and IHSAA, provided Jonny with a pathway to achieve more each year while he grew his potential through his efforts. He has developed as a student-athlete, as a person, and has a skill and mindset that will only create more opportunities as he finishes high school this year and moves on to Purdue this fall where he will continue his achievements as a collegiate student-athlete.”
