Carmel and Hamilton Southeastern easily defended their girls tennis sectional championships on Thursday.
Playing at their home courts at the Todd Witsken Tennis Center, the No. 1-ranked Greyhounds beat No. 10 Guerin Catholic 5-0. All five matches were decided in straight sets. The ‘Hounds won their 26th consecutive sectional title, and 34th overall.
“There’s just been a much better intensity now that sectionals have begun, which is nice,” said Carmel coach Spencer Fields. “We’re playing matches that really, truly mean a lot, and they mean a lot to the girls. They showed that when they played today.”
The Golden Eagles finished their season with a 10-5 record.
“We had a good season,” said GC coach Stephanie Hunn. “We beat all the teams we should beat, didn’t have any bad losses. I’d say we definitely got a little bit deeper in doubles, which was good.” The Golden Eagles also had a few new girls in the lineup, which allowed them to get experience at the varsity level.
Over at Fishers, No. 12-ranked Hamilton Southeastern won the sectional trophy for the fourth straight year by beating the Tigers 5-0. All the matches were decided in straight sets.
“We really came out and played well on all 5 courts tonight,” said HSE coach Kirk Webber. “We got out to a great start and never looked back. Our singles girls hit the really ball well, played aggressively, and didn’t let the windy conditions bother them. Our doubles girls really took over the net and did a very nice job of finishing off points.”
Both teams advance to regional semi-finals on Tuesday. Carmel will play at Kokomo, while the Royals play at North Central.
