The Carmel boys track and field team cruised to a fourth consecutive sectional championship Thursday in a pleasant evening at Carmel Stadium.
The Greyhounds won with 176 points, picking up seven event wins and qualifying several athletes on to the Lafayette Jeff regional next Thursday.
“I thought we ran very well tonight,” said Carmel coach Ken Browner. “I told the kids, we know this is all about advancing on to regional, but we also needed to have some good championship performances. Today I thought some kids really ran some good races from a tactical standpoint, and the kids competed very well.”
Fishers finished second, holding off Westfield and Hamilton Southeastern for runner-up honors with 101 points. All three schools had multiple event wins and regional qualifiers as well.
Carmel spread around the victories, taking all three relays, two running events and two field events. Leading the way was Ryan Lipe, the senior pole vault sensation who is pretty good at running, too. Lipe showed that by achieving state standards in winning the 100 dash (10.95) and his signature event, where he vaulted 15-9.
“We do a lot of preparation in practice,” said Lipe of his busy day. “Some days I’ll be vaulting, and then take a break and go and do 4×1 handoffs and stuff like that. A lot of speed work and stuff like that.”
“He’s a unique individual,” said Browner of Lipe. “He is the unicorn, as they call him. He does some amazing things.”
The Greyhounds also got wins from Spencer Gudgel in the 400 dash and Bryce Sharp in the discus, throwing a state standard 164 feet even. Then Carmel swept all three relays, with the 4×100 clocking in with a state standard 42.42.
“I did not know that was going to happen,” said the coach. “We still got some things to clean up, so I think we can definitely still go faster in all three of the relays. I think we are looking for bigger and better things.”
The Tigers’ three wins came from Jalen Moss, who held off Westfield’s Evan Manley to win the 200 dash by 0.08 seconds. Cameron Kosegi was first in the shot put, and William Syrus won the long jump with a state standard of 22 feet, 5.75 inches.
Westfield finished third with 97 points. Aaron Bennett won the 800 in a standard time of 1:55.74, and Justin Mamaril finished first in the 300 hurdles.
Southeastern was a close fourth, scoring 94 points. Gabe Fendel paced the long-distance events, winning the 1600 and 3200 runs. Madison Norris took the blue ribbon in the 110 hurdles. Noah Malone was second in the 100 dash, but in a state standard mark of 11.02.
Noblesville finished in fifth place, and advanced a handful of athletes on to the regional. James Hardin qualified in the 400 dash, Eric Hoffman made it in the 3200 run, Jaden Wills earned a spot in the long jump, and Drew Hartmann qualified in the shot put and discus. The Millers’ 4×400 and 4×800 relays also advanced to regional.
Sheridan had the most remarkable performance of the meet. The Blackhawks finished 1-2 in the high jump: Tommy Glidden won with a leap of 6-5, while Nick Burnell was second by jumping 6-4, hitting the state standard on the nose.
“We got 6-1 before this,” said Glidden, so both Blackhawks easily improved upon their personal bests. “It was a great opportunity and a great time to get our best height.”
“A lot of competition just pushing us,” said Burnell.
Hamilton Heights’ Jesse Brown placed fourth in the long jump, but is likely to get a callback to the regional. The top four times from the four sectionals that feed into the Lafayette Jeff regional earn spots in next week’s competition.
