Tennis: Huskies beat Lapel in hard-fought dual

The Hamilton Heights boys tennis team scored a hard-fought, 3-2 win over Lapel on Tuesday.
The Huskies got wins from Erik Malott at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4 and the No. 2 doubles team of Colin Weber and Grant Cavanaugh 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Then at No. 1 doubles, the team of Josh Russell and Jake Martin came back from trailing 5-4 in the third set, saving four match points. The Heights team got into a tiebreak and won 8-6. The final match score was 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6).
“It’s the first time in many, many years we have beaten Lapel,” said Huskies coach Wayne Rupe. “They have been loaded talent-wise for many years in tennis. I was glad to see our guys persevere and pull out the win.”
Heights travels to Lebanon on Saturday to finish the regular season.

Westfield, ranked No. 16 in the state, completed its regular season with a 4-1 win over Terre Haute North.
No. 1 singles Quentin Markle won 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 singles Connor Housefield got a 6-1, 6-3 victory. In doubles, No. 1 Christian Emigh and Brett Barnes were 6-1, 6-3 winners, while No. 2 doubles Carson Kessler and Ben Jones triumphed 6-4, 6-1.
