Tennis: Greyhounds go 5-0 over Golden Eagles, Tigers beat Millers, Royals take down Huskies

The IHSAA tennis sectionals began across the state on Wednesday, including action at two Hamilton County sites.

Defending state champion and No. 2-ranked Carmel hosted play at the Todd Witsken Tennis Center. The Greyhounds won their semifinal over No. 24 Guerin Catholic 5-0, taking all five matches in straight sets.

In the other semifinal, No. 9 Westfield beat University 4-1. The Trailblazers’ lone win came from No. 1 singles Laurel Buttrick, who was victorious 6-2, 6-4. Buttrick will now advance to the individual state tournament, which begins next week.

The Shamrocks will play Carmel this afternoon for the sectional championship. Play begins at 5:15 p.m.

Tigers, Royals advance

Over at Noblesville, No. 4 Fishers and No. 15 Hamilton Southeastern both won semifinals to advance to the championship at that site.

The Tigers beat the No. 5-ranked Millers 3-2. No. 1 singles Mischa Briggs, No. 2 singles Izzy Mokra and the No. 2 doubles team of Madelyn Baron and Meredith Ober won their matches for Fishers.

Noblesville’s winners were No. 3 singles Josie Flinchum in a third-set super tiebreak, and No. 1 doubles Lina Hamashuk and Cami Crist. Hamashuk and Crist will play in the individual tournament next week.

The Royals beat Hamilton Heights 5-0, winning all five matches in straight sets.

Fishers and Southeastern play for the championship today at 4:30 p.m.
