YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program launches in Westfield

Prediabetes threatens over one-third of American adults, and most don’t even know they’re at risk. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program provides proven, community-based classes to help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by over half.

Enrollment is open now and classes begin soon in Westfield.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday beginning Oct. 29 at the Westfield Washington Township Center, 174000 Westfield Blvd. There is no cost to attend that to Health First Indiana Funding through the Hamilton County Public Health Department.

To register, call (317) 269-6004 or email changemylife@indymca.org.

About the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program

Offered in Indianapolis since 2006, the program emphasizes two primary goals: reduce body weight by 7 percent and increase physical activity by 150 minutes per week.

In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach helps participants change their lifestyles by learning about healthy eating, physical activity, and other behavior changes. Topics include: nutrition, getting started with physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated, and more. The program meets once a week for 60 minutes for four months, followed by bi-weekly and monthly sessions for up to a year.

“Lifestyle changes are key,” said Anna McIntire, Association Director of Community Health. “By taking practical, everyday steps, participants in the program can reverse prediabetes and reduce the risk for developing Type II diabetes, and associated dangers such as heart attack, stroke, blindness and even amputation.”
