Dear Editor:

Since announcing our campaign late last year, the support we have received all across the city has been unimaginable. I cannot thank everyone enough for the hard work you have or will put in to get us across the finish line in May.

For the past 28 years, the plan for our city has rested on the vision of one man, Jim Brainard. He’s done a tremendous job in leading the charge that got us to where we are today.

But now, we are at a crossroads for our future, and we as a community get to decide the best leader to move us forward.

I decided to run for mayor of our great city to give you a voice and a seat at the table as we write Carmel’s next chapter together.

I’ve heard over and over again that you want someone who will fight for strong and safe neighborhoods, a strong fiscal plan and continued access to our incredible amenities.

You want someone who will be able to help small businesses thrive, arts prosper and ensure our city is managed with a strong vision, increased transparency and integrity. It’s very clear that you want a leader who will put our residents first.

I’m a CEO, and I’ve served our community for 12 years on the city council, but my most important job is mom. I’m running for mayor because I believe that we can build upon Carmel’s successes with greater community collaboration to take our city to new heights. The way we did things yesterday won’t solve tomorrow’s challenges, and our world-class city should never settle for the status quo.

As your next mayor, I will provide you with increased access to city operations by enhancing our transparency and giving you a voice in our future. Fiscal discipline, protecting our high quality of life including our parks and trails, better infrastructure in our neighborhoods, effective and efficient government services are all important; however, keeping our community safe is job No. 1.

Carmel is the best place in America to live, work, play and retire. As a mom, I want the same opportunities to exist for my son when he returns home for college and begins raising his family right here in Carmel.

I look forward to talking to each of you in the coming days and weeks about your vision for our city and I will continue sharing my ideas.

I hope I can earn your support in the May 2 Republican Primary.

To Our Future,

Sue Finkam
Carmel mayoral candidate
