Structural engineers have been hired to investigate and recommend a solution to “structural concerns” with or below the foundation of the Lacy Building now under renovation on the Courthouse Square, according to Robert Herrington, Noblesville communications manager.

Last week the city planning department issued a “stop work” order on renovation work. A foundation problem was discovered when contractors on the job dug beneath the foundation, Herrington said. The stop work order was lifted on Tuesday of this week after engineers were engaged.

The results of their investigation have yet to be learned and the length of time for any repairs is unknown.

The 135-year-old building at 848 Logan St., which most recently housed Kirk Hardware Store and the Linden Tree gift shop, is being leased to Nickel Plate Arts for studio and workspace. Commercial space on the first floor is likely.

The building is owned by Chris and Katie Nurnberger, and with a lease to Nickel Plate Arts, sub-leasing to artists and art related firms is planned.

The historic structure, built during the Gas Boom Era, was the original home of the Noblesville Boys’ Club. It also housed the Logan movie theatre. A hardware store was also located there for more than 100 years.
