Stephen Roger Smith

January 9, 1944 – February 19, 2022

Stephen Roger Smith, 78, Sheridan, passed away on Saturday afternoon, February 19, 2022, at Maple Park Village in Westfield. Born on January 9, 1944, in Vandalia, Ill., he was the son of the late Ralph and Viola Smith.

After completing his years of service in the United States Air Force, Stephen went to work in the environmental sector. He spent the majority of his working years as a fuel tank inspector, most recently working for Environmental Petroleum Services.

When he wasn’t on the jobsite, Stephen was somewhat of a homebody. He enjoyed watching the Colts and keeping up with NASCAR, but family was his favorite past time. He loved traveling with his wife and couldn’t imagine life without his grandkids.

Stephen is survived by his sons, Lonnie E. Smith (Bonnie) of Crothersville, and Mark A. Smith (Jennifer) of Westfield; daughter, Teresa A. Hottinger (Andy) of Sheridan; grandchildren, Tasha Van Middles Worth (Joe) of Sheridan, and Stephanie Smith of Westfield; great-grandchildren, Justice and Tatum; brother, Charlie Smith of Beecher City, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nadine Deal; and by his wife, Glenda L. Smith on December 5, 2013. She and Stephen were married in 1963.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. Pastor Scott McDermid will be officiating.
