State of Westfield’s safety: hear from police & fire chiefs at Chamber luncheon

The Westfield Chamber invites business leaders, residents, and guests to attend the June Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, at The Club at Chatham Hills, 1100 Chatham Hills Blvd.

The luncheon will feature the Westfield Police Department’s newly appointed Chief of Police Shawn Keen and Westfield Fire Department’s Chief Robert Gaylor. Hear them discuss the state of community safety, as well as what their departments have planned for the city’s future.

Police Chief Shawn Keen

Keen

Keen received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in history from Chaminade University of Honolulu and his Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Oklahoma. He is also a graduate of the 259th Session of the FBI National Academy and the Indiana Associations of Chiefs of Police Executive Leadership Academy.

Keen is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served as a military policeman and later as a member of the Hawaii Armed Services Police on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

Keen served as a sworn member and chief of the Terre Haute Police Department for 26 years before joining the Westfield Police Department as Chief. During his time with Terre Haute, he was assigned to the uniform patrol division and criminal investigation division where he served as assistant chief for 10 years. In addition to these primary duties, he served as an operator, sniper, team leader, and commander of the Special Response Team for over 17 years. He was also a member of the department’s honor guard for over 18 years.

Gaylor has been in the Fire and EMS service since 1995 and part of the Westfield Fire Department since 2004. Through this time he has had the opportunity to participate in many different functions ranging from incident scene management, NFL training camp, presidential rallies, and long-term projects such as Computer Aided Dispatch and implementation of a radio system. He has have progressively taken on more responsibilities and positions within the department: Deputy Chief of Business Operations, Deputy Chief of Operations and the Division Chief of Training, Lieutenant, Driver, Firefighter/EMT.

At levels outside of the organization, Gaylor is a member of multiple organizations, including the District 5 Incident Management Team, Indiana Task Force One, Indiana Fire Instructors Association, and the International Association of Arson Investigators. He is a past or present member of the Indiana Department of Homelands Security Training Council for Districts 4 and 5, and an adjunct instructor at Ivy Tech College, State Instructor for the Executive Leadership Development course, and State Instructor, Live fire 1403 instructor.

Gaylor still finds time to volunteer as a football coach and mentor at his local high school for the last 10 years. He is an internationally recognized instructor and is a past speaker at the Indiana Safety and Health Conference. He is married and has two children with his wife Amanda.
