Softball: Royals go 2-1 at Terre Haute South

The Hamilton Southeastern softball team returned to action Saturday by playing in the Terre Hate South Lady Braves Bash.
The Royals went 2-1 for the tournament. Southeastern dropped its first game to Tecumseh 5-0. Jenna Chase hit a fourth-inning double and was one of five Royals players to get one hit during the contest.
Southeastern rebounded to win its next two games comfortably, first beating Edgewood 6-3. The Royals blasted to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first inning, leading off with a single by Lani Wyrick, who then stole second base.
Taylor Larson smacked a double into center field to score Wyrick, then Sage Ladig hit a left field double to send Larson home. Maddie Bucher came in to run for Ladig, and she moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Morgan Hicks’ center field hit.
Southeastern’s next run came in the third inning, when Payton Fox batted in Bucher. The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the third, but HSE got one back in the top of the fourth. Stephanie Penny led off with a double, then scored when Emma Vance singled her home. That gave the Royals a 5-3 lead.
Southeastern picked up one more run in the sixth inning. Wyrick started things off with a center field triple, then scored on Paige Gould’s RBI groundout. Wyrick and Ladig both had three hits for the game. Alex Kiemeyer also hit a double in the fifth inning.
Ladig pitched a complete game, striking out three.
The Royals finished their day with a 7-4 victory over host Terre Haute South. Southeastern got on the board in the bottom of the second inning; Fox led off with a double, then Kiemeyer cracked a two-run home run into right field.
In the fourth inning, HSE scored three runs, starting with a two-run single by Vance that scored Penny and Tessa Sexauer. Vance was later sent home on Chase’s base hit.
Vance got another RBI in the fifth inning, when her right field hit sent Bucher home. Paige Gould completed the Royals’ scoring in the sixth inning when she got home after Lucy Hahn reached on error.
Vance had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3. Wyrick, Fox and Kiemeyer all had two hits. Tori Donato pitched a complete game for the win.
Southeastern is 2-3 for the season and plays Monday at Mount Vernon.
