Carmel opened up play at its own invitational on Friday with two victories, achieved in different ways.
First, the Greyhounds blasted their way to a walkoff win over Avon 6-5. Carmel trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but only needed two at bats to claim victory: Leadoff hitter Jessica Remm blasted a 3-2 pitch over the center field fence for a game-tying home run, then Sophie Esposito nailed an 0-1 ball into left field for another homer, and the win.
The ‘Hounds scored a run in the first inning. Ella Ohrvall blasted a triple into field, and was sent home by a Lily Sullivan single. In the third inning, Kylie Cunningham cracked a two-run homer into left field, also scoring Esposito. Hope McDonald scored a fourth-inning run on Maddie Stacy’s RBI groundout.
Esposito was 3-for-4 at the plate, and McDonald hit a double. Lucy Broughton got the pitching win.
Carmel won its second game of the night by beating Franklin Central 17-7 in five innings. Esposito, McDonald and Elsa Morrison all hit home runs, with Sullivan getting a triple. Six different Greyhounds players had two hits; Morrison finished with four RBIs, while Esposito, Sullivan and McDonald each drove in three runs. Cunningham and Sullivan both scored three runs.
Paxton Law pitched all five innings, striking out five.
Carmel is 6-4 and plays two more invitational games this afternoon, taking on Roncalli at 1 p.m. and Penn at 3 p.m.
