Softball: Millers win twice at their Invite

The Noblesville softball team celebrated a milestone while winning two games at its own Miller Invitational on Saturday.
Noblesville took care of New Castle 16-6 in five innings, then beat Plainfield 11-1 in six innings. With the victories, Millers coach Deke Bullard reached the 100-win mark at Noblesville.
In the Millers’ first game, the Trojans hit a home run in the top of the first inning, but the Millers responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Gabby Fowler batted in the first run, Taylor Thompson hit a two-run double, then scored on an error. Kinsey Pfeiffer finished the inning with a center field homer.
Noblesville rolled in three more runs in the third inning, then put up seven more runs in the fourth. Fowler tripled in a run, then was scored by a Scout Duplaga double. Bella Schatko later hit a three-run double. Duplaga would finish the game in the fifth inning, as her lead-off home run got the Millers’ lead to 10 runs.
Thompson was 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in another three. Schatko finished with two doubles among her three hits. Lulu Van Beek got the pitching win.
Noblesville also got off to a fast start against the Quakers, scoring six runs in the first inning. Lauren DeRolf led off with a triple, and was soon scored by Duplaga’s base hit. Erin Clark hit a two-RBI single and Reis Sjoholm batted in a run. The Millers batted around, so DeRolf came up again during the inning and nailed a two-run single.
Kinsey Pfeiffer smacked a two-run homer in the second inning, then Aidan Gates batted in a run. DeRolf had three hits and drove in three runs, while Clark scored three runs. Emme Yee pitched a complete game for the win.
Noblesville is 9-7 and hosts Mount Vernon Monday.

Westfield blasted its way to a 12-2, six-inning home win over Kokomo Friday.
The Wildkats scored a run in the top of the first inning, and the Shamrocks immediately answered that in the bottom of the first when Avery Parker batted in Maggie Roh. Parker singled in Mya Hughes in the third inning.
Westfield let loose for six runs in the fourth inning. Chloe Tanner and Roh both hit RBI singles, then Parker blasted a grand slam home run over center field. The Shamrocks now led 8-2.
If that wasn’t enough, Natalie Deck opened the fifth inning with a homer. Deck also hit a two-RBI single in the sixth, and Morgan Squires drove in a run.
Parker finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Roh and Avery Banas both hit a double. Tanner pitched a complete game, striking out five.
Westfield is 11-4 and plays Monday at Lawrence North.

Fishers sailed past Zionsville 7-1 in a Friday Hoosier Crossroads Conference game at the Eagles’ field.
The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the third inning, and added three more in the fourth. Hannah Trueblood had three hits, including a double. Karyn Trice smacked a triple, and both Nyah Duplessis and Hannah Abbott counted a double among their two hits. Kaylee Kardash also had two hits.
Kate Murray pitched a complete game for the win.
Fishers is 2-2 in the conference and 6-8 overall. The Tigers play a home HCC game Tuesday against Avon.

Hamilton Heights split a pair of games Saturday at the Wabash Lady Apache Classic.
First, the Huskies dropped a 5-3 game to Knox. Heights scored a run in the top of the fourth inning when Emma Blanton tripled in Kassidy Schakel. Knox scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, but the Huskies responded with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Ashlyn Tharp led off with a single, then Jessa Steffen batted her in. Steffen later scored on a Lily Roush double. That gave Heights a 3-2 lead, but Knox tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, then scored twice in the sixth inning.
Roush and Tharp both had two hits, with Tharp also hitting a double. Roush pitched a complete game, striking out 14 and allowing only three hits.
Heights won its second game, beating Wabash 16-0 in five innings. The Huskies scored in each inning, with seven runs in the second inning alone. Kaylee Rhoton blasted two triples, with Roush and Schakel each hitting one. Schakel batted in four runs, Natalie Newman drove in three runs, while Steffen and Rhoton both scored three runs. Schakel had three hits.
Roush pitched all five innings, striking out 11 against just one hit and one walk.
Heights is 5-9 and plays at Lewis Cass on Tuesday.

Guerin Catholic dropped a 2-0 game at Danville on Saturday.
The Warriors held the Golden Eagles to four hits, including a double by Anna Mauch, and scored one run each in the fourth and sixth innings. Izzy Kemp had another solid outing, striking out 14 and allowing just one hit.
Guerin Catholic is 5-5 and plays Monday at Sheridan.

Hamilton Southeastern lost a tough game on Friday night, as Pendleton Heights came back to beat the Royals 7-6 at the Arabians’ field.
The Royals scored three runs each in both the first and second innings. Payton Fox delivered all three of the first-inning runs with a center field home run; Jenna Chase and Maddie Bucher also scored. In the second inning, Emma Vance led off with a base hit, then moved to third base on Lani Wyrick’s double. Vance got home on a fielder’s choice bunt by Taylor Larson, Sage Ladig then singled in Lani Wyrick, and Larson scored when Fox hit a sacrifice fly.
Southeastern led 6-0 after that, but Pendleton Heights came back. The Arabians got within 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh, and won the game with a two-run double.
Wyrick, Larson and Fox all had three hits for the Royals.
Southeastern is 7-9 and hosts Noblesville on Tuesday.
