The Guerin Catholic softball team returned to action Tuesday by hosting Brebeuf Jesuit in its Circle City Conference opener.
The Braves won 11-9 in a back-and-forth contest. Brebeuf scored two runs in the top of the first inning before the Golden Eagles roared back with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Lauren Brady led off with a triple, then Madi Cain batted her home with a center field single. Lucy Kemp got her own center field RBI to score Cain, followed by an Anna Mauch single that brought Kemp home. Izzy Phillips smacked a right field hit to send Kate Brady and Natalie Eiler home, giving Guerin Catholic a 5-2 lead.
The Braves got a run back in the second inning, then scored again in the fifth to cut GC’s lead to 5-4. The Golden Eagles made it 6-4 with a run in the bottom of the fifth; Eiler’s left field base hit sent Ava Augustinovicz home.
Things took a turn in the sixth inning, as Brebeuf put up seven runs to lead 11-6. Mauch stepped up in the bottom of the sixth, smacking a two-run home run into center field. Kemp also scored. Jillian Davis hit a center field single to score Eiler in the seventh inning, but that would be all.
Mauch finished 3-for-3, while Kemp counted a triple in her two hits. Eiler also had two hits. Augustinovicz pitched a complete game, striking out three.
Guerin Catholic is 2-3 and plays this afternoon at Lawrence Central.
