The Noblesville girls soccer team hosted Carmel Monday at Hallmark Orthodontics Soccer Complex for a showdown between last year’s Class 3A state finalists and the Nos. 1 and 2 ranked teams in the state.
The No. 1 and defending state champion Millers won this round, beating the No. 2 Greyhounds 2-0. Noblesville scored both of its goals in the second half. First was Jenna Chatterton, who kicked the ball in from the middle in the game’s 51st minute.
With under six minutes to go in the game, Makenna Maloy converted a penalty kick for the Millers’ second goal. Noblesville goalkeeper Sara Kile made three saves, while Carmel’s Erin Baker had one save.
The Millers are 8-0 for the season and will be back in action at home tonight, hosting Franklin Central in a 7 p.m. Hoosier Crossroads Conference game. The Greyhounds dropped to 12-1, and return to Murray Stadium tonight to take on Center Grove in a 7 p.m. Metropolitan Conference game.
The Hamilton Heights girls team, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A, opened play in the Hoosier Conference Tournament cruised to a 9-1 victory over Western Tuesday at the Huskies’ field.
Kyndall Ferguson, Cassidy Felger and Maria Mitchell all scored two goals for Heights, with Jenna Peterson, Jayla Logan and Ella Hickok each scoring one. Ferguson made two assists, while Felger and Hickok each had one.
The Huskies are the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, the first time in school history they have made that achievement.
“I thought they came out tonight, had just flashes of really good play,” said Heights coach Travis Kauffman. The coach said there were “moments that we were flat and sat back,” but the Huskies responded in the second half, started that period strong and put the game away.
Heights will play its next game Thursday at West Lafayette.
After the girls played, the Hamilton Heights boys team took on 3A No. 19 Harrison Tuesday.
The Raiders won 5-2. Harrison led 4-1 at halftime, so Heights played to a tie in the second half.
“Honestly, all season we’ve been a second-half team,” said Huskies coach Drew Colvin. “We tend to play a little soft and slow off the start, then the second half, we always pick it up.”
Will Hilton scored both goals for Heights, one in each half.
“He plays mostly defense, and then when I need a spark on offense, he’s super aggressive, so I can throw him up on offense and he usually gets us a big score,” said Colvin. “It jars their defense. They’re not ready for somebody like Will.”
The Huskies are 7-5-2 and will host Western Saturday morning.
The Sheridan girls team played at Eastern on Monday, falling to the Comets 8-2.
Kadance Voege scored both goals for the Blackhawks. Eastern led 4-1 at halftime.
Sheridan plays at Rossville on Thursday.
The Carmel boys team, ranked No. 4 in 3A, clinched the Metropolitan Conference championship by playing to a 1-1 tie with Pike on Tuesday.
Medard Mikobi scored the Greyhounds’ goal, off an assist by AJ Caito.
“Tonight was a tournament atmosphere game,” said Carmel coach Shane Schmidt. “I am proud of how the guys continued to work hard, even after we went down.”
The Greyhounds are 5-0-1 in MIC play and 9-1-2 overall. They play at Cathedral on Thursday.
The Noblesville boys team, ranked No. 1 in 3A, kept its Hoosier Crossroads Conference and overall record perfect Tuesday with a 3-2 win at Franklin Central.
The Millers scored twice in the first half. Palmer Ault scored the first goal in the 14th minute, with Spencer Holland getting the assist. Four minutes later, it was Ault providing the assist to Garrett Poynter, who put the ball in the net.
Noblesville got is third goal during the first minute of the second half, with Holland scoring off an assist by Ault. The Flashes scored twice in the second half, but the Millers were able to hold on.
“We made this game closer than it should have been and there was a lot of pressure in the final five minutes,” said Noblesville coach Ken Dollaske. “Our defense held strong, including some stellar work from CT [Colin Todd].”
The Millers are 5-0 in HCC play and 10-0 overall. They return to Hallmark Orthodontics Soccer Complex on Thursday to host Lawrence Central.
Hamilton Southeastern, ranked No. 2 in 3A, fell to 3A No. 10 Zionsville 1-0 Tuesday in an HCC game.
The Eagles scored their goal on a corner kick late in the second half.
The Royals are 5-1 in the conference and 9-1-2 overall. Southeastern plays at Marion on Thursday.
