Sheridan slowly pulled away from old rival Clinton Central on Friday night, grinding out an 18-6 win at Bud Wright Stadium in what was also the first Hoosier Heartland Conference game of the season for the Blackhawks.
Both teams scored six points in the first quarter. Sheridan scored its points right away, as Christian Clausen took the opening kickoff 77 yards to score.
The Bulldogs tied the game by the end of the quarter, but the ‘Hawks took the lead for good midway through the second period when Gavin Reners punched in the ball from the one-yard line. Reners added another short-run touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Reners finished the game with 154 yards rushing on 32 carries. Peyton Cross added 35 yards. Zach Bales completed a 33-yard pass to Cayden Hunter, while Mason Robinson connected on a 16-yard pass to Cole Webel. The ‘Hawks totaled 207 yards of offense, while allowing the Bulldogs only 61 yards of offense.
Sheridan is 1-1 for the season and plays at Tri-Central next Friday to continue conference play.
