In the final two weeks of school, Sheridan Elementary School (SES) had multiple field trips and grade-level activities that took them to locally known places that offer new ways to learn for these young scholars.

Last Thursday, May 15, SES second graders took a trip to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. Then on Tuesday, May 20, the kindergartners had their turn exploring the attraction.

The Indianapolis Children’s Museum is one of the largest and most known, so it remains a top field trip destination for schools. Students were able to visit the unique exhibits that enhance their learning. The field trip complements classroom instruction of any grade as it offers many exhibits on reading, writing, science, art, and culture. SES students learned in a new way as they took in the dynamic displays and had a blast while doing so.

Also on Tuesday, May 20, first graders had the opportunity to visit Cool Creek Park, which is a part of Hamilton County’s Parks and Recreation system. As they visited the park and Nature Center, they made the most of the rainy day. Students were able to travel through several stations in and around the nature center to learn about plants and wildlife that are native to the area and locally known. At one station, students identified animal tracks and were able to paint their own molding of an animal track to take home. At another station, students learned about tree species and their unique leaves. At this station they were able to create a souvenir stamp book of leaf printings.

The first graders also learned from park employees who shared facts about locally known wildlife such as snakes and turtles. First graders had a blast learning outside the classroom and examining the exhibits. Many shared that they were eager to return to Cool Creek Park to learn even more with their families.
