The Westfield softball team opened its season Monday with an 11-5 win over Monrovia.
A big second inning was the difference for the Shamrocks, but Avery Parker gave a sneak preview of what was to come in the bottom of the first inning. She tripled in Westfield’s first run, scoring Maggie Roh, who had earlier drew a walk to get on base. Cara Snedeker advanced Roh with a sacrifice bunt.
Since Monrovia scored in the top of the first, the game was tied going into the second inning. But not for long. Roh batted in the first run, hitting a single with the bases loaded to send Allie Dolenc home. Later, Parker smacked an 0-1 ball over the center field fence for a grand slam home run. Ava Kainrath, Mya Hughes and Roh also scored.
And the ‘Rocks weren’t done. Natalie Deck hit a double to get on base, then was sent home by Samantha Breaux’s single. Monrovia got the third out, but Westfield had a 7-1 lead.
The Shamrocks scored their other four runs in the sixth inning. Brookly Miner got on base after being hit by a pitch, and Hughes came in to run for her. Hughes would be home quickly, as Roh knocked in a triple to score her.
Roh scored on the next at-bat, a left field single by Cara Snedeker. Later, Breaux batted in a double to score Snedeker and Parker, who got on after being hit by a pitch.
Parker finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs, while Breaux totaled three RBIs in a 2-for-4 effort. Roh also had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs. Rylie Redstone pitched four innings for the win, striking out four.
Westfield hosts Taylor on Thursday.
