Dear Editor:
Carmel continues to be the epicenter of municipal debt in Hamilton County. Of the four major cities, Carmel has borrowed 56 percent of the $1.4 billion those cities reported to the Indiana Department of Local Government as their Jan. 1 principal borrowings.
Oddly, Carmel has issued just 35 percent of the 127 bonds outstanding. Fishers has issued 31 percent; Noblesville, 27.5 percent, and Westfield, 5.5 percent.
All four reported the amount of principal and interest due to be paid back by Dec. 31. Carmel bears 48 percent of the $137.1 billion total; Fishers, 27 percent; Noblesville, 20 percent, and Westfield, 5 percent.
Isn’t it interesting that the indebtedness organizes itself in alphabetical order?
Strange virus, that.
