The Hamilton Southeastern boys basketball team won three of four games last weekend at the Homestead BSN Holiday Tournament, placing third overall.
The Royals started by splitting two pool-play games last Friday. Southeastern fell to South Bend St. Joseph in its opening contest, 88-85. Five players scored in double figures for the Royals, with Maverick Young, Braeden Totten and Lucas Weemer all pouring in 19 points. Landon Osswald had 12 points and Jack Jacobs scored 11.
Totten made three 3-pointers. Weemer’s 12 rebounds gave him a double-double. Jacobs, Young and Totten all had five assists.
Southeastern rebounded with a 69-42 victory over Valparaiso. HSE was in front early, leading 16-7 after one quarter and 41-19 by halftime. The Royals led by as many as 31 points, 56-25 towards the end of the third period.
Ten different players scored for Southeastern, led by Totten with 12 and Osswald with 10. Osswald collected six rebounds, with Kendrick Pennybaker and Kallen Hoeft each pulling five. Jacobs and Totten again dished out five assists.
The Royals rolled through both of their games last Saturday. First, HSE took care of Fort Wayne Carroll 61-45 to finish pool play. The contest was knotted at 13-13 after one quarter, but Southeastern pulled away in the second, outscoring the Chargers 23-8 for a 36-21 lead. The score stayed around that margin in the second half.
Jacobs and Weemer both scored 11 points, with Totten adding 10. Kian Kelly and Jacobs each handed out five assists.
The Royals finished 2-1 in pool play and qualified for the third-place game, which they won 55-49 over Penn. The Kingsmen bolted out to a 15-7 lead after the first quarter, but Southeastern came back in the second to take a 24-23 halftime advantage. The Royals outscored Penn 17-9 in the third period to lead 41-32, then held on in the fourth.
Osswald put up 15 points, while Totten scored 10 again. Osswald and Weemer both pulled seven rebounds and Jacobs handed out six assists.
Southeastern is 6-4 for the season and returns home on Friday to play Crown Point.
