The Hamilton Southeastern basketball teams split a Hoosier Crossroads Conference doubleheader Friday at Zionsville.
The Royals girls team beat the Eagles 43-40 in a hard-fought game that finished Southeastern’s HCC season. The Royals led 12-7 after the first quarter, but Zionsville, ranked No. 9 in the ICGSA Class 4A poll and No. 13 in IBCA one-class ratings, came back in the second period to take a 23-21 halftime lead.
Southeastern stepped up its defense in the third quarter, holding the Eagles to four points, and that allowed the Royals to take a 30-27 advantage going into the fourth period. Olivia Brown helped out HSE in that quarter, scoring nine points.
Brown led the way for the Royals with 18 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Riley Makalusky added 10 points.
In the boys game, Southeastern fell to Zionsville 58-51. The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the Class 4A Associated press poll and No. 5 in the IBCA rankings, stormed out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter, then went up 31-15 at halftime. Zionsville held a 39-19 advantage in the third period before the Royals started to come back, cutting that lead to 42-31 by the end of the quarter. Southeastern scored 20 points in the fourth period, but the Eagles held on for the win.
Sam Jacobs scored 18 poins for the Royals, and also had six assists and four steals. Donovan Hamilton added 15 points and Reph Stevenson contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
The Southeastern girls finished HCC play 4-3 and are 13-7 overall. The Royals host Pike on Tuesday for their regular-season finale.
Southeastern’s boys are 2-2 in conference play and 5-8 overall. The Royals boys play tonight at Mount Vernon, the No. 20 team in the IBCA poll.
