The Westfield and Guerin Catholic boys tennis teams met for a scrimmage Thursday on the Golden Eagles’ courts.
Both teams will be relatively young this year, but they will have experienced players. The Shamrocks have all three of their singles players back from last season, starting with senior Parker Paramoure at the No. 1 position. Paramoure won the individual sectional title last year; Westfield coach Tony Peters said Paramoure is “the engine that keeps us going.”
Paramoure is joined in singles play by sophomore Luke Stoecker at No. 2 and junior Ajay Prasanna at No. 3. Both played varsity singles last season.
As for the doubles, senior Leyton Steill and freshman Payton Paramoure played No. 1 at the scrimmage, with senior Ben Soukup and sophomore Charlie Juleen at No. 2. Other players that could factor into the varsity lineup are senior Ben Hocker, juniors Maverick Beier and Finn Ryan and freshman Ben Steele.
Peters said players were out “hitting a lot” during the summer – “everybody’s committed,” he said. “We’re excited for the season.”
Meanwhile, Guerin Catholic has underclassmen on the list for its three singles positions. Junior Charlie Phillips is playing at No. 1 singles, sophomore Jack Tiplick is at the No. 2 position and junior Jake Husmann is playing No. 3.
The Golden Eagles’ No. 1 doubles team at the scrimmage was senior David Cacchillo and sophomore Nick Sills. Other players that could find a place in the varsity lineup are seniors Blake Durflinger and George Hein, and junior Cole Giesler.
“We got a lot of senior leadership on the doubles court, so that’s going to bleed into our lineup,” said GC coach Wyatt Metzger. The coach said he expects his team to be “a complete team by October,” in time for the post-season.
