The Westfield girls basketball team opened its season with a 51-41 win last Tuesday at North Central.
The Shamrocks got going early, taking a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. Sam Price scored eight points, while Lindsey Van Dyke drained two 3-pointers. Westfield stayed in front 23-19 at halftime and 35-32 after three periods, then pulled away with 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Price scored six points in the fourth and finished with 20 points for the game. Aubrey Crockett and MaKayla Hatcher each totaled nine points.
The Shamrocks played their first home game last Saturday, taking on Pendleton Heights at CSI Gymnasium and winning 53-46.
Westfield jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter, with Van Dyke and Price both scoring six points. The Rocks expanded their advantage further in the second period, going up 30-15 by halftime. Price totaled 10 points at halftime.
The Arabians chipped away at Westfield’s lead in the second half, but the Shamrocks were able to hang on for the victory. Price scored six more points in fourth quarter and finished the game with 19. Meg Hamilton added nine points. Aubrey Crockett and Van Dyke each scored eight points, with Crockett going 5 of 6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Westfield is 2-0 and hosts Lawrence Central Wednesday in its lone game of the week.
