The Westfield softball team celebrated WYSI night by giving its young fans something to cheer about.

The Shamrocks beat Bishop Chatard 8-4 in a Friday night game. Westfield scored right away in the first inning: Makayla Watson got on with a base hit, stole second base, then scored on Ava Kainrath’s center field double.

The ‘Rocks took further control of the game in the third inning, putting up five runs. Alyssa Ayers and Sofia Easterhaus started the inning with base hits. Adelyn Kurth came in to run for Ayers and scored when Kainrath reached on an error. Easterhaus got home when Chloe Tanner reached on an error.

Kainrath got home on a wild pitch, then Annika Lawrence (running for Tanner) scored when Camp Pulice reached on an error. Reese Mahannah hit a single to score Pulice, giving Westfield a 6-0 lead.

The Trojans scored their first run in the fourth inning. Westfield got the run back in the fifth inning when Pulice got home on a passed ball. Chatard added another run in the top of the sixth, but the ‘Rocks answered again: Kurth bunted in Lawrence. The Trojans scored twice in the seventh inning, but Lawrence caught a right field flyout to finish the game.

Tanner also hit a double in addition to getting the pitching win. She threw five innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits. Sydney Jordan pitched the other two innings, with two strikeouts.

“I think we’ve had some ups and downs, but as of late, we’re playing well,” said Westfield coach Brian Revercomb. “The kids are focused and working hard in practices. I’m really excited about the rest of the season and heading towards sectionals with the draw coming up this weekend.

The Shamrocks are 8-5 and play Monday at Hamilton Heights.
