State Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn (D-Fishers) has begun visiting House District 32 elementary schools to connect with her youngest constituents in first and second grades. Her new community engagement program, “Read with your Representative,” aims to introduce kids to government and encourage civic activity from a young age.

“I want our students to feel that the sky is the limit when it comes to civic engagement,” Garcia Wilburn said. “I am thrilled to help introduce them to how government is a public service. They have big, energetic hearts and curious minds, and I want to help show them what they can do with that and dream big for themselves, including becoming an elected official.”

Books like If I Ran for President by Catherine Stier, President’s Day by Anne Rockwell and P is for President by Wendy Cheyenne Lewison breaks down the topics of Congress, civics, and elected officials to the students in engaging, easy-to-understand literature.

“Seeing those small hands raised high in the air to ask a question is incredibly inspiring. There is so much they don’t know, but so much they want to know,” Garcia Wilburn said. “I leave every classroom feeling refreshed and excited. Their contagious energy and eagerness to help Indiana and the world inspires me to bring that same positive attitude to work every day at the Statehouse.”

Garcia Wilburn aims to visit elementary school classrooms in Fishers, Carmel, and Indianapolis through her “Read with your Representative” program.
