Rep. Spartz co-sponsors bipartisan Congressional Gold Medal Act recognizing Ukraine’s defenders

Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) joined Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) and other colleagues in introducing the bipartisan Defenders of Ukraine Congressional Gold Medal Act. The bill will collectively award the distinguished Congressional Gold Medal (CGM) to the defenders of Ukraine in recognition of their crucial role in the defense of western democracy and against Putin’s aggression.

“The strength and fortitude of the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom is truly inspiring for many Americans and people around the world,” Rep. Spartz said. “It reminds many of us of the founding of our Great Republic.”

Upon being awarded, the medal would be presented to that country’s democratically elected government, on behalf of the defenders of Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian people are truly resilient,” Rep. Johnson said. “Despite looking down the barrel of the Russian military, Ukrainians continue to defend their homeland and answer the call to protect their republic. The United States stands behind Ukraine and is opposed to Putin’s act of war – our House Resolution makes that clear.”

The CGM is an award bestowed by Congress and is the highest civilian award in the United States. The decoration is awarded to an individual – or group of individuals – who perform an outstanding deed or act of service for the security, prosperity, and national interest of the United States.
