Dear Editor:

As Governor Eric Holcomb laid out his priorities in the 2023 State of the State address on Jan. 9, he spoke of the need for a renewed commitment to face many of the challenges that Hoosiers experience every day. Public health. Education. Economic growth. With so many pressing issues facing the state, I want to thank him for keeping his focus on the issue of clean energy.

In the six years since Governor Holcomb took office, the clean energy industry in Indiana has flourished, growing job opportunities across the state. Indiana has been proud to welcome numerous multibillion-dollar investments including Mammoth Solar and the battery production plant under construction to the north in Kokomo.

The benefits of these projects will also extend to locally-owned businesses who will grow alongside the next generation of clean energy producers, revitalizing towns across the state. Even Carmel Clay Schools, as a result of federal infrastructure investment, has begun to embrace zero-emission vehicles by upgrading some of their buses to entirely electric. This not only saves the district money on fuel costs, but improves the air quality in and around the schools.

As the 2023 legislative session kicks off, we need to ensure that we maintain this momentum by expanding market based clean energy sources across the state, particularly as the country begins to explore new 21st century energy sources.

Like Governor Holcomb said, we must “capitalize on the industries of the future that are looking for their new homes somewhere in America.”
